WHAT'S NEW FEBRUARY 2012 / NOUVELLES

Bullet Heritage Week

This year, Heritage Week will run from February 13th to February 20th 2012 under the provincial theme “War and Peace”. On Wednesday, the 15th of February, which is also National Flag Day, the Bathurst Heritage Museum will celebrate the theme with a special evening of music and song by “Friends in Song”. Everyone is welcome. Festivities begin at 7 pm. Veterans from the Knowles Veterans Wing may be present as special guests. Light refreshments will be served after the music.

National Heritage Day is always the third Monday of February so this year it will be February 20th. The National Theme is “Heritage of Power Generation”. As early as 1904, John L. Léger was already generating power for the City of Bathurst from the Tetagouche Falls Hydro-Electric Plant located about 8 miles from town. Mr. Léger was instrumental in getting “The Bathurst Electric and Water Power Company Limited” incorporated by an Act of Assembly. A new plant was built in 1912 and, in 1919, the Company was purchased by the Bathurst Lumber Company. In 1921 another electric power plant was constructed at Grand Falls on the Nepisiguit River and Bathurst had cheap electricity until the NBEPC took over. The Museum has actual hydro bills sent to the W. J. Kent store in 1916 as well as pictures of John Léger and his family. He was the forefather of the Légers of Bathurst, a very prominent family over the years.
